This poster was commissioned by the Underground in 1926. Frederick Charles Herrick's bold design was issued in the summer. It promotes the Tube as a cool and comfortable means of travelling while the weather is hot. A complementary poster was issued in the winter declaring 'It is warmer below'.
Frederick Charles Herrick designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport between 1920 and 1933.
F C Herrick studied at Leicester College of Art and Crafts and the Royal College of Art. He designed the famous Wembley Lion logo for the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 and worked as a painter. A prolific poster designer he also produced posters for the Anchor Line (steam ship company) and the RMSP (Royal Mail Steam Packet). Most of his many Underground posters were designed for the Baynard Press, where he was Head of Studio.
