Hidden London Aldwych Station

Gail Brodholt is a painter and printmaker of the contemporary urban landscape. Her work depicts the London transport network and the journeys made across the city on tubes, trains and in the car: the unconsidered backdrop to our daily lives. She works in her purpose built print studio in Woolwich, South-East London. Somerset 300gsm printmaking paper and linseed oil based inks are used for this print. Four lino blocks are used to create the linocuts and print each one over a few days (to allow each layer of ink to dry). Each linocut is printed on an Albion press, made in 1841. Poster Size: 63.5 x 75cm Please follow this link to find out more about Hidden London tours with London Transport Museum.

It was opened in 1907 with the name Strand, after the street on which it is located, and was the terminus of the short Piccadilly line branch from Holborn that was a relic of the merger of two railway schemes. During its lifetime, the branch was the subject of a number of unrealised extension proposals that would have seen the tunnels through the station extended southwards, usually to Waterloo.
