Night at the Theatre, Doris Zinkeisen 1939

Doris Zinkeisen, the hugely talented Scottish painter and theatrical designer, was commissioned by London Transport in 1939 to produce this artwork. Its purpose was to encourage travel to London's Theatreland but the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 meant that promoting 'frivolous' activities was deemed inappropriate and the poster was never used. Now, eighty years later, Underground customers can enjoy this gorgeous, unseen image for the very first time.
