Using simple bold shapes and bright colour, artist Julia Allum wanted to hark back to the golden age of lidos and create a contemporary take on 1930s poster art. Upon visiting, it was the beautiful art deco fountain framed by the entrance arch that initially caught her eye. Julia knew this was to be the focus of her illustration. The use of bright, warm colours transforms what was a cold February day, giving the final illustration an almost exotic feel. A place to visit and escape the stresses of everyday life, an unexpected oasis in West London.
Uxbridge lido first opened in 1935 when lidos were in their heyday. It remained popular for many decades but unfortunately fell into disrepair before eventually closing in 1998. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in outdoor swimming and the site was completely renovated in 2010. It now includes a new leisure complex with the lido being restored to it’s former glory.
About the artist:
Since graduating from Falmouth college of arts 20 years ago Julia has worked in various styles across advertising, publishing and packaging. It is however only recently that she has truly found her niche with her big, bold style. Winning the Silver Award in the Association of Illustrators & London Transport Museum’s prize for illustration in 2017 proved to be a catalyst and she hasn't looked back since.
