Busabout 30x40 Print
'Busabout' was published in 1970 to promote travel by bus to historic sites and leisure attractions across London.
The highly sculptural mosaic is made up of white marble blocks. This was the third design Hans Unger and Ebehard Schulze had produced for London Transport using this technique. Unger had learnt the ancient Byzantine craft of glass mosaic work at workshops in Ravenna and Venice.
The relatively muted colour palette focuses attention on the iconic red London bus, whose services this was promoting.
The colour, texture and three dimensional quality of the mosaic gives the impression of an aerial view of historic and labyrinthine central London, adding interesting depth and shadow.
The bold geometric shapes make it modern, but the ceramic stone colours also emphasise the centuries-old architecture.
