This is one of the most iconic Boat Race posters in the collection, designed by two artists, Bernard Leslie Kearley and Kate M Burrell. It features Cambridge and Oxford boats coming through the arches of Putney Bridge and promotes travel to the annual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge. The asymmetrical composition and flat use of colour give the work a primitive feel. There is no sense of pictorial depth, other than that created by overlapping forms. The deliberate lack of perspective, combined with the use of light blue for the bridge in the foreground, keeps the eye of the spectator moving across the surface. This is a clever way to prevent the focus being drawn away from the text.
Bernard Leslie Kearley designed posters for London Transport between 1924 and 1927. Kate M Burrell designed some of her posters together with Bernard Leslie Kearley. This may be Kathleen Burrell a founder, in the 1920s, of Clement Dane Studio, which was a commercial design company. The Studio produced a range of material including posters, catalogue covers, book jackets, maps, letter headings, press advertisements, and trade marks for such companies as Mac Fisheries and Crosse & Blackwell.
