A striking poster design by Margaret Calkin James that was published by the Underground Electric Railways Company in 1932. Her bold use of colour shows the spectacle of Trooping the Colour and advises passengers of the nearest stations to view this iconic parade. Margaret Calkin James designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport between 1928 and 1935. Margaret Calkin James was born in 1895 and brought up in a well-off home, her father being an underwriter at Lloyd’s Bank. She trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, specialising in calligraphy. She was married to architect, C H James, and they enjoyed a 'simple life' reflecting the 'Arts & Crafts' ideals popular at the time, living in London but spending much time in rural Sussex and later at Chipping Camden in the Cotswolds. Partially paralysed after a stroke at seventy-four, she then became a skilled embroiderer.
