Southen Crowstone was designed by Charles Pears in 1929. This poster features a sky of warm orange with yellow highlights which is reflected in the shallow water at the forefront of the image. The clarity of the reflection helps to demonstrate to the viewer the idyllic landscape which Southend offers, easily accessible from Southend station.
Charles Pears was born in 1873 in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England. Pears began working as an artist in 1898 when he became a theatrical cartoonist on Pick-Me-Up where he worked until 1902. Between 1913-1936 Charles Pears designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport. Charles Pears spent much of his artistic career as a prolific poster artist before his death in 1958. During his career Charles Pears worked designing posters for London Transport, Metropolitan Railway, Southern Railway, London Midland, Scottish Railway, London and North Eastern Railway, Great Western Railway and Empire Marketing Board.
