A strikingly bold promotional poster to attract London Underground passengers to Kew Gardens. This work was originally produced as a colour lithograph by artist Maxwell Ashby Armfield in 1915.
Maxwell Ashby Armfield was born in Ringwood Hampshire and studied at the Birmingham School of Art before moving to Paris in 1902 and studying at Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and the Atelier Colarossi. Armfield then moved to the United States in 1915 and ran the Department in Stage Design at Berkeley University alongside his wife. It was in 1915 that Armfield also produced his poster ‘Go to Kew’ for the Underground Electric Railways Company Ltd.
