Frederick Schneider Manner’s ‘No wet no cold’ was produced for Underground Electric Railways Company Ltd. In 1929. This art deco style poster from 1929 plays on the theme of the London Underground being a climate-controlled space and a refuge from the wet and dreary London streets which many posters of the time reiterated.
Born in Switzerland in 1889, Manner came to London as a child. In 1929 Manner designed ‘No wet no cold’ for Underground Electric Railways. Manner’s career included working for the Daily Worker, preparing the Hob Nob cartoons with Clifford Rowe as well as designing costumes for the Unity Theatre. He also produced posters for the National Savings as well as London Transport and went on to teach commercial art at Goldsmith’s College in the 1950’s.
