During the 1920s there was widespread use of umbrellas in London Underground marketing posters. This popular poster by Koop features a sea of vibrantly coloured umbrellas as they move towards the open doors of the store in the distance.
The doors in the background of the poster may also be representative of the entrance to the Underground, a refuge from the ever-changing London weather.
Mary Koop produced ‘Summer Sales’ for the Underground Electric Railway Company Ltd in 1925, enticing riders of the tube to use the service to reach the sales of the summer in London. Koop, born Mary Bredall in 1884, studied at the Croydon School of Art and the London School of Art before beginning her work with the London Underground.
