Florence Nightingale No.17 Carriage

A collectible model of the Florence Nightingale carriage has been produced exclusively for London Transport Museum.

About the Metropolitan Railway E Class No.1

Following a near decade-long overhaul and refurbishment, the Inspection Saloon returned to traffic in 2019 as LT 45029, resplendent in London Transport lined maroon livery. LT 45029 is named ‘Florence Nightingale’ after one of the Metropolitan Railway’s 1920s Metropolitan-Vickers electric locomotives, No. 17, which in turn had been named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), pioneer of modern nursing and a relation of the Verney family, who in the 1860s established the railway through what became known as ‘Metro-Land’.

‘Florence Nightingale’ is now used for rail tours and charters – on the Underground Metropolitan line and main line – as part of a rake that variously includes the two London Transport livered Class 20 diesel locomotives ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Sir John Betjeman’, E Class steam locomotive ‘Met 1’, Metropolitan-Vickers electric locomotive ‘Sarah Siddons’, and the LT-liveried Class 438 4-TC 4-car set.
